The Turkish Lira is the official currency of Turkey<\/strong> and of the Turkish Republic of the North of Cyprus. Its ISO 4217 code is TRY and its symbol is TL. Every Lira is divided in 100 kuru\u015f<\/em>.<\/h4>\n

History<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 1844 the Lira was introduced. Until then the official currency had been the kuru\u015f<\/em> and with the arrival of the Lira it turned into a fraction of the Lira. Due to the high inflation, in the year 2005 six zeros were eliminated to the Lira and they started to begin to issue the New Liras, which are those that we know today.<\/p>\n

Notes and coins<\/strong><\/p>\n

At the present there are two series of Turkish Liras. The bank notes of the Turkish Lira<\/strong> are 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 Liras. On the front of the notes appears the image of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (the first president of the Republic of Turkey) and on the back appear different prominent figures of the Turkish history, science and culture.<\/p>\n

Turkish Lira coins<\/strong> are minted by the Turkish National Mint and Stamp. They are of 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 kuru\u015f and of 1 Lira. You can see how they are in the web of the National Mint (in Turk): Darphane<\/a><\/p>\n
