Discovering … El Campello

A brief look to the city of El Campello

El Campello, in case you never heard of it before, it’s a town near Alicante right in the coast. And talking about coast, El Campello has no less than 23 km of coast. If you know a bit of Spanish you will be asking yourself: Why if it is a coastal town, El Campello sounds like campo (countryside) in Spanish? In fact, the name comes from the word campo because this area it was an agricultural area. Same people worked on the fields and take the boats out to fish in the past as their way of living.
At the begging of the past century El Campello became a town and gained its independence form the city of Alicante. Even that shows El Campello as a young city there are many historical buildings and monuments because the town, as part of Alicante, has many years.

This small paradise it has all a city has to offer but with the surrounds of a town. It can be the best place to retire and enjoy your life. Even El Campello has amazing beaches and many buildings along the seaside, there is not the typical party beach city of Alicante. There is a calming aroma around this small town where you can at the same time be at the café listening to some relax music or take a few steps and dip your feet at the Mediterranean waters. But El Campello has more to offer, lets name a few amazing sites in this marvelous town.

Queens Baths in El Campello

The name comes from the legend that some Muslim queen used to bath in these waters, but in fact it was built by the roman to form different pools to keep different fishes separated. After the time passed and the water erode the rocks, it became a great place to bath and relax in those squared that once upon the time were used by the romans.

Torre de la Illeta

This 16th century watchtower is part of the story we mentioned before. The symbol of El Campello was used in the past to protect the shore from pirates. In case of an attack, horsemen will run along the beach to inform the next tower and so on in order to protect the cities.

Fish Auction

Yes, is right, a fish auction. No cars, jewelry or art, fish. Fresh fish auctioned when the boats come after a hard day of work and where, if you are a new habitant or the oldest in town, the only thing that counts its money, the higher bet gets the best fishes.

As I mentioned before, El Campello it is a great place to retire. Quiet town with all the services you would need, along the beach side and …. Fish auctions, what else can you ask for? That’s the reason many people from other countries move to El Campello and form a beautiful multicultural community.
And of course, what else is in El Campello? that’s right, and Eurochange office. We are there to exchange your currencies into Euros. I know you all want to go into a bidding war with your neighbors for that fresh fish, but I doubt they will take British pounds, so check our location in town and come exchange those pounds to euros and then …. Go get that fish.

A brief introduction and some places to visit of the beautiful city of Murc

Murcia, a charming and underrated region of Spain. If you’re looking for a hidden gem, somewhere away from the overcrowded tourist-y areas of Spain, this might be the place for you. Officially twinned with Miami, Murcia is the total opposite of the city of vice being a special laid-back provincial capital with an array of interesting sights and a pleasant center which can be easily strolled around. Unlike some of the larger cities in Europe, Murcia is largely uncrowded, with plenty of wide-open spaces where you can reflect and take a moment of calm, making it the perfect city for those who do not like cities. In fact, it has the feel of a small town. But that doesn’t mean that there’s not still loads going on.

Murcia, much like Valencia, is famed for its huerta, a surrounding zone of market gardens dating back to Moorish times, which supply the city's restaurants with excellent fresh produce and drive a thriving tapas scene.

The city is renowned for its gastronomy. In fact, the region of Murcia is often called the “Orchard of Europe”, because its fertile valleys produce much of the fruit and veg which is exported throughout the continent. Murcian cuisine features lots of fresh veggies, as well as amazing seafood from the rich coastline. The region is also well known for its amazing desserts and pastries, so be sure to give some a try.

Next, we will tell you a few things that you can do and places to visit around Murcia, not just in the city but also next to it.

Many of the streets are pedestrianized, so this is a gorgeous place to simply stroll around, explore and be awe-inspired. Sit and have a coffee at one of the many cafes and watch the world go by and relax.

Visit the Wine Museum at Bullas

This region of Spain is famous for wine production so why not visit the wine museum? Located in what was previusly one of the largest and most poductive bodegas in Murvia. The building fates back to the early 19th Century and originally used to belong to one od the richest and most influential families in the district, the Melgares of Aguilar.

Murcia has plenty of seaside towns where you can balm out and get some sun, relax and explore. For the more active amongst us, there are the opportunities to go fishing, diving and snorkeling. From the fishing town of Águilas to the white dunes of the beaches in San Pedro del pinatar, there is stretch kilometer after kilometer of golden sandy beaches to enjoy. Plus, there´s plenty of beach side bars and cafes where you can enjoy the freshest seafood, traditional paellas and maybe a cold beer while you soak up the sun.

Floridablanca Gardens

Did you know that Floridablanca Garden was the first public garden in the whole of Spain? It´s located in the heart of a district called El Carmen which is one of the most charming districts in the city Centre.

The garden is currently an avenue that leads from the entrance nearest to Camachos Square to the statue of José Moñíno, Count of Floridablanca, the work of the Italian S. Baglietto, which was placed in its present location in 1849.

A quick visit to Barcelona as a ouristic city and it´s most iconic places.

Spain is one of the countries that welcomes most tourist in the world. Before the last pandemic, Spain used to welcome more than 80 million tourists during the year, lately numbers are getting back to what it used to be.

Spain has a great strength to attract all those many tourists: the sun. The fantastic weather all around the country is one of the reasons why people from all over the world visits Spain.

There are many interesting cities to visit around the country: Barcelona, Madrid, Granada, Valencia, Bilbao, Malaga, Vigo, Sevilla, and a long etc. All of them have their own charm and their own culture, but we are going to focus on the first one to share with you a little bit of the Spanish taste for this summer.

Barcelona it´s a fascinating Mediterranean city and one of the most popular destinations in the world. During the summer, this rose-colored city becomes vibrant with colors, attracting tourists and locals alike to its shores. From the fantastical Sagrada Familia church to the infamous Park Güell, designed by Antoni Gaudi, Barcelona is a rare mix of historical significance and modern practices.

There are plenty things to do during the summer, but we going to name some of them and let you choose which one you prefer.

Barcelona´s architecture it´s one of it´s most attractive features. Even it is probably hard to visit all in a day, we encourage you to visit some of the most genuine buildings from the Mediterranean city.

As mentioned before, the Sagrada Familia is a must, Gaudi´s last unfinished Project which stills under construction will offer you an amazing view of the breathtaking and looming towers against the clear blue summer sky.

The Park Güell is another famous attraction from the city. Another of gaudi´s creations that expands for more than 17 hectares and offers amazing views to enjoy under the summer sun.

Montjuïc gardens it is also a nice place to take a summer stroll. Montjuïc is home to a number of beautiful gardens such as the Grec Garden, the Laribal Garden and the Mossen Cinto Verdaguer Gardens, all od them peaceful and quiet just in case you want to get away from all the city rush.

And talking about architecture, we cannot forget some iconic Barcelona´s buildings as the Casa Vicens, the Casa Milá and the Casa Batllo, all of them unique, beautifl and original buildings to enjoy during our visit of the city.

The Mediterranean diet, worldwide famous, it´s at its fullest in the Ciudad Condal. For the longest time you could enjoy a fabulous meal, if you were lucky, at one of the best restaurants in the world: El Bulli. But that´s is just one of many, we would need 3 or more post to name all the restaurants with at least one Michelin Star on Barcelona. But the best part of this Mediterranean pearl as Barcelona it’s that you don’t need to go to one of those great name restaurants, you can enjoy the Mediterranean kitchen at every small restaurant, bar, or tavern thru the city. We all know how famous Spanish Tapas are, just get a taste during your stay.

We cannot finish this post without talking about the Mediterranean Sea. Barcelona has some of the most beautiful beaches of Spain. The hot temperatures and the calm Mediterranean waters offer a perfect combination to start your day with a quick swim and some tanning.

And for all the sports fans out there, Barcelona it´s also the home to the famous Barcelona FC, football fans flock to Barcelona’s Camp Nou to watch the Barça boys work their magic on the field.

Barcelona welcomes around 1 million Americans every year, being the non-European nationality that visits the most. At Eurochange you can change your dollars to Euro in one of our locations. Las Hogueras de San Juan (the bonfires of St. John), Alicante

The summer starts with the celebration of the popular Hogueras de San Juan

Every year during June 24th´s night in Alicante takes place an original celebration involving Fire and Water, but mostly fire. The Hogueras (or bonfires) date back to the early 19th century and this tradition has being delevoping to get where they are nowadays.

There are many stories about the origins of this festivities. The most accepted is the one that dates the origins of this festival many many centuries ago when Spanish towns and villages celebrated the Summer Solstice with purifying bonfires. In the Alicante area, the agricultural workers celebrated the longest day of the year for harvesting and the shortest night with fires to scare bad spirits that could possibly come and harm them. Others stories tell that the origin lies in the tradition of burning useless objects with the arrival of the summer solstice. There are even stories about how the big stick figures were build to make fun of unwanted neighbours and then set on fire to show them they were not wellcome .

But nowadays the Alicantinos work all year around to build and place throughout the city over 200 large satirical papier mâché statues that are lit on fire on the night of the 24th.

And the tradition continues after the figures are burned with popular “midnight rain”, where firefighters water everybody around the statues to help them cope with the high temperatures and also for the fun of it.

But this is not all Alicante has to offer during the Hogueras festivities. Along with the statues being place and receiving thousands of visits during the week, many others activities are taking place everyday around the city. The daily Mascletàs” (a stunning fireworks and firecrackers competition held from the 20th to the 24th in the Plaza de los Luceros square at 2pm), the proclamation known as the Pregón, the procession of the effigies known as the Cabalgata del Ninot, and parades, with a special floral tribute to the Virgen del Remedio are just some of the many things to see around the city those days.

This festivities attract people from all over the world. And in Eurochange we are here to help you with your money exchange.
