History
The first Krona who arrived in Iceland was the same that was used in Norway, Sweden and Denmark because Iceland was a Danish territory. In the World War I this monetary union was dissolved and Iceland seceded from Denmark. The first Icelandic Kronas were minted in 1922.
Banknotes and Coins
Icelandic Krona banknotes are 500, 1000, 2000, 5000 and 10000 Krona. Each of the names is dedicated to an important figure in Icelandic culture and tradition. As the writer Jónas Hallgrímsson; Ragnheidur Jónsdóttir, third wife of Bishop Gísli Þorláksson; the painter Jóhannes S. Kjarval; Brynjólfur Bishop Sveinsson or Jón Sigurðsson, leader of the Icelandic independence movement in the Nineteenth Century.
The Icelandic Krona coins are 1, 5, 1.0, 50 and 100 Kronas. A bull, a faucet, a dragon and a giant: in the reverse these four guardian spirits of Iceland appear. And on the cross appear different species of typical marine animals.
