About the Norwegian Krone

The Norwegian Krone is the currency of Norway and its dependent territories (the islands of Svalbard and Jan Mayen). Its ISO code 4217 is NOK, it’s represented with th symbol kr and it is divided into 100 øre.

History of the currency of Norway

The Norwegian Krone was introduced into the country in the nineteenth century, in 1875, to replace the Norwegian speciedaler with a ratio of 4 crowns for every speciedaler. By introducing the new currency Norway joined the Scandinavian Monetary Union which was established in 1873. This union lasted until 1914 but after its dissolution, Denmark, Norway and Sweden decided to keep the name of the currency of their respective territories.

Norwegian Krone notes and coins

The legal tender notes of Norway Krone are 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 Krone. They are issued by the Bank of Norway and, currently, are in a process of renewal.

The 50, 500 and 1,000 Krona notes belonging to the old series of banknotes (series 7) maintain the representations of notable characters of the Norwegian culture such as Peter Christen Asbjørnsen, Sigrid Undset and Edvard Munch. On the back are images of objects related to these characters.

There are also already notes of 50, 100, 200 and 500 Krone belonging to the new series (series 8). In these notes the design is totally new. The main images of these notes are representative images of life in the sea, representing how the Norwegians have been a people who have found sustenance in the sea and who have used it for exploration and trade since antiquity. The designs contain the Utvær lighthouse on the 50’s note, which is located at the westernmost point of the country; the typical Viking ship Gokstad, which is the largest Viking ship preserved in Norway; a cod, representing the strong presence of fishing in the Norwegian economy and tradition; and the sailboat RS 14 "Stavanger" on the 500 note, created as a rescue boat in 1901.

In 2019 the 1,000 Krone notes will be issued in this new series where an image of the waves in the open sea will appear.
