Thai Baht

The Thai Baht is the official currency of Thailand. Its ISO 4217 code is THB and its symbol is ฿. Each Baht is divided into 100 satang.

History

The baht was introduced in 1897 to replace other currencies that were based their value with weight. In thai the word baht is a unit of weight, as can be a kilo or a pound.

Until 1910 there coexisted with coins of the decimal system with the former older coins and from that year they started to issue only the Baht that we know today.

Notes and coins

Baht banknotes are 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 Baht. In the front of the banknotes appears a picture of King Rama IX and on the back are images of previous kings.

Baht coins are 25 and 50 satang and 1, 2, 5 and 10 Baht. The King Rama IX appears on the heads of the coin and on the tails appears different temples of the country.
