The History of the US Dollar and the Benefits of Exchanging to Euros with Eurochange in Spain

Una breve introducción a la historia del dólar y los beneficios de cambiar

Destinations of Contrast: USA, Spain, and Latin America

When crossing the Atlantic, we face different financial realities.

  • United States: If you travel to iconic cities like New York or Los Angeles, you will need dollars for tips, local transport, or street food. Although cards are widely used, cash is indispensable.

  • Latin America: In countries like Ecuador or Panama, the dollar is the official currency, and in many others, it is the preferred currency to avoid local devaluation. Bringing dollars from Spain will open many doors.

  • Spain: If you are an international traveler or have saved dollars and arrive in Spain, visiting historic cities like Madrid, Valencia, or Barcelona requires euros. Enjoying a Valencian paella, visiting the Sagrada Familia, or strolling down Madrid’s Gran Vía is much easier when you carry local currency.

Why it is Recommended to Carry Cash

Relying solely on credit cards during an international trip is a risk. Carrying cash after a smart money exchange offers unparalleled advantages:

  • Avoid Airport Commissions: International ATMs and airport exchange bureaus often apply very high fees.

  • Better Exchange Rates: By planning ahead, you ensure your money goes further.

  • Security and Spending Control: Paying in cash helps you visualize your daily budget, avoiding bank surprises at the end of the trip.

  • Travel Comfort: Paying for an early morning taxi or buying a souvenir in a local market without a data network is only possible with cash.

Why Exchange Currency Before Traveling

Anticipation is a traveler’s best tool. The difference between exchanging at your destination versus your home country can mean significant savings.

If you are traveling from Spain to America, the smartest way is to buy your dollars online. At Eurochange, we make it easy to buy dollars with direct home delivery, so you leave home fully prepared. On the other hand, if you have dollars (whether you are traveling to Spain or have savings) and need to exchange from dollars to euros, we invite you to visit any of our physical branches. Practical Travel Tips

Make your adventure perfect by following these essential tips:

Advance Bookings

Secure your accommodations and flights months in advance. This not only guarantees availability but also locks in prices before currency fluctuations affect you.

Smart Luggage

Travel light but prepared. Adapt your clothes to the destination’s climate and always carry a small amount of cash in your carry-on luggage, never in your checked bag.

Responsible Use of Cash

Divide your money. Don’t carry your entire budget in one wallet. Use the hotel safe to store the bulk of your euros or dollars.

Travel Security

Stay alert in crowded areas and historical monuments. An inner money belt is ideal for carrying your documents and cash discreetly and safely.

December´s long weekend

December´s long Holliday Weekend

This week we are having one of the most expected days for everyone in Spain, we are talking about the Holliday weekend that goes from December 6th until December 10th , which is called December´s long weekend. This is what we call in bridge. But why is it called a bridge? And which holidays include? What to do during these days? Well let’s explain all this.

Why is a bridge?

In Spain we call a bridge to what is known in English as a long weekend. That usually means that a holiday falls into a Monday or a Friday. But in Spain is also called when a holiday falls into Tuesday or Thursday, since many people take the day off in the middle to enjoy a much longer weekend. That is where the term Bridge comes from, because is like we build a bridge between the 2 holidays taking that extra day off.

Which days are actually a holiday in this December´s long weekend?

In this case the 2 holidays are the 6th and the 8th of December. This year those 2 holidays are on a Wednesday and a Friday, which allowed many people to take Thursday off and enjoy a 5 days weekend.

December 6th is the day of the Spanish Constitution. In Spain we celebrate the constitution, which is the document where all Spanish rights and obligations are written.  On December 6th, 1978, the Spanish citizens voted in favor of this document, and that is why is celebrated on this date.

December 8th is the day of the Immaculate Concepcion. This is a religious holiday that celebrates the birth of the Virgin Mary, mother of Christ. An many holidays, this one has its origins on the Christian religion.

Those 2 holidays are considered unmovable, which means that doesn’t matter on which day of the week they fall, that’s the day the holiday will take place.

What to do in Spain during this long weekend?

Well, there isn’t enough entries in this blog to show you how much Spain has to offer during this weekend. But what I can tell you is what Spanish families do. Is it common in Spain to spend these holidays decorating the houses for Christmas. Also, most cities already have the Christmas decorations up. There are plenty Christmas markets in a lot of Spanish cities which are full of Christmas food, decorations and other things celebrating the magic of Christmas.

And what Eurochange has to do with all of this?

Long weekends are always a perfect excuse to travel. Many Spanish people used this one to travel all over the world and many of them used Eurochange to exchange their euros into foreign currencies. At the same time, many people for overseas know of the existence of this long weekend in Spain (as most of you know) and they feel like a perfect opportunity to visit our county. For those, Eurochange gives them the chance to exchange dollars or exchange pound or exchange any foreign currency into euros at any of our offices around Spain. So, if you are in Spain enjoying this long weekend or you return from it, make sure you come to Eurochange for all your currencies ‘needs.
