About Colombian Peso
The Colombian Peso is the official currency of the Republic of Colombia. Its ISO 4217 code is COP and its symbol is $ but it’s usual to see it represented with COL$. Each Peso is divided into 100 cents, but currently the coin with the lowest value is the 50 Pesos one, and the note with the highest value is 100,000 Pesos.
History of the currency of Colombia
Until the year 1810 the official currency of Colombia was the Real. But in that year the Colombian Peso replaced the Real. At this time 1 Peso was divided into 8 Reals. In 1847 they acquired a decimal system, so each Peso was divided into 10 Reales. Six years later, the Real was renamed Décimo (tenth), so each Peso was worth 10 Décimos or 100 cents.
For some years now, the Colombian Senate has been discussing the possibility of renaming the Peso by issuing a New Peso with a change of 1 New Peso = 1,000 Pesos. This measure has not yet been adopted, but in the new family of notes issued in 2016, denominations have been shortened with the word "mil" (thousand) to make them easier to name: instead of "10,000 Pesos" appears "10 Mil Pesos".
Colombian Peso banknotes and coins
Currently, two families of Colombian Peso notes are in circulation, the Current Family (Actual Familia) and the New Family (Nueva Familia). In the two series of banknotes, relevant figures of Colombian history, politics and culture appear.
BANKNOTES IN CIRCULATION OF COLOMBIAN PESO
The Actual Family notes began to be issued in 1995. The denominations are 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000 and 50,000 Colombian Pesos. They are expected to be phased out, but there is currently no set date. The characters of this family are: Dr. Jorge Eliécer Gaitán, General Francisco de Paula Santander, the poet José Asunción Silva, Policarpa Salavarrieta, the astronomer Julio Garavito and the writer, politician and soldier Jorge Isaacs.
The New Family notes began to be issued in 2016. The denominations are 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000 and 100,000 Colombian Pesos. The 100,000 Peso note was introduced for the first time in this new family of notes. The characters represented in this family are: the artist Débora Arango, the poet José Asunción Silva, the anthropologist Virginia Gutiérrez, the president Alfonso López Michelsen, the writer Gabriel García Márquez and the president Carlos Lleras Restrepo.
The Colombian Peso coins are 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 Pesos. As in the case of banknotes, two series also coexist with the current and the new series. In the old series appear the coat of arms of Colombia, a pre-Columbian figure and the Guacarí tree. The new coins incorporate images of typical species of flora and fauna: the spectacled bear, the frailejón, the flag macaw, the glass frog and the loggerhead turtle.
