Picasso and the Euros

Two strange coins with Pablo Picasso as their main theme

We know a lot about Pablo Picasso, his life and his work. But there is not much relationship between the artist and currencies… or there is?

You will be surprised to know that there are limited edition euro coins related to the artist and, even there is not much information available about them, we are going to share with you what we could find out about this amazing discovery

Guernica Square Gold Coin

An square coin? Yes, but not only square, but also made out of gold and with a 50-euro value. Thats the face value, but the real value of this coin is much much higher. We could not find out much about this coin, just that it was made on France, there are around 1.500 of them and that it has its own silver version with a face value of 10 euros.

On one side we can see the Guernica painting, one of the most famous of Picasso´s painting if not the most. On the other side we can see a mix of some famous French museums. The really strange square gold coin can be bought online for around 1000 euros.

Pablo Picasso in the Twenty-first Century

Another curious coin is the silver 10-euro coin with the portrait of Pablo Picasso in the Twenty-first Century in one of the sides. This coin is part of a collection issued in Spain the work of another of the greatest Spanish artist, Salvador Dalí.
In this case, this coin is not as strange or valuable as the previous one, but still more valuable than the face value of 10 euros, it can be found online for around 50 euros.

At Eurochange we decided to keep involving Pablo Picasso with currencies, in our case by opening a new office next to his former house in Malaga. Soon, really soon, we will be opening our latest office located at the Merced Square just a few meters away from Pablo Picasso´s house. We won’t be able to sell or buy the special edition coins we talked about today, but we will offer you all kinds of currencies from all over the world and not just offer them to you, but also buy them from you with amazing exchange rates.

So, stay tuned to our blog to see when we are actually open and come visit us, exchanging currency and visiting Pablo Picasso´s house sounds like a plan for me, what about u?

Christmas Markets
There are plenty Christmas markets to enjoy in Madrid during these dates. Some of them are full with attractions, some are like fairs, some are more party markets, but we will like to focus on one: The Christmas Market in Plaza Mayor.
This traditional market begun his history back in the 17th century but it was placed at the Plaza de la Cruz. By the 19th century the market moved to the Plaza Mayor. From those times until today you can buy Christmas decorations, seasonal food and sweets all around the market. More than 100 both where you can walk around free of charge. Do not miss it!

New Years at the Puerta del Sol
The Spanish tradition states that you need to eat 12 grapes, one of each of the clock’s gongs, at new year´s midnight in order to have good luck to the incoming year.

Usually this happens at Spanish’s homes where people do it among friends or family. But Madrid takes it a step further. If you want to celebrate this tradition among thousands of persons you can do it at the Puerta del Sol in Madrid. People walks into this enchanted square to join others into this celebration. People from all over the world converge during that magical minute, eat the grapes and, of course, wash them down with some champagne.

These are just two of the main attractions Madrid has during Christmas, but there are plenty more, we will make sure to show you some more maybe for the beginning of 2023.

Are you a fan of street market? Do you like sustainable food? Are you in Barcelona from October 21th and October 23rd? Then we have a perfect plan for you.

From Friday 21th until Sunday 23rd Barcelona is going to be the home of the world famous Mercat de Mercats (Market´s Market). In Barcelona and throughout Catalunya, food markets are a feature of everyday life. Why shop in a supermarket where the food arrives on the shelf after a long process of transportation and storage when you can eat fresh and local fruit, vegetables, meat and fish? Markets are also often the focus of a community, a place to bump into neighbors, chat, or drink a coffee in a bar. In this sense they offer much more than just shopping, but are part of Catalan life and culture. Markets such as La Boqueria de Sant Josep on Les Rambles have become famous globally in recent years

The Gastronomy Festival par excellence is celebrating this year a new edition. A major festival of food products and gastronomy, which takes place on the Plaça de les Glòries, is a unique event for enjoying talks, presentations, cooking shows and tastings by professionals and journalists in the world of gastronomy. This year, among promoting local products, the event will promote the net of markets of Barcelona and the locals working on them.

The market offers all kind or products from veggies till the best local beers. In order to help people to enjoy the experience, the festival is going to have an incredible barbeque when people will be able to cook their own purchases there. With this new addition, the event it is looking to not just promote the product, but also to increase people participation make it a whole experience where people from all over the world will meet and enjoy the best Barcelona has to offer in food and drinks.

Discovering … Fuengirola

A few places to visit while in the beautiful Fuengirola

Located in the amazing Costa del Sol, Fuengirola is a clear example of what Andalusia is all about. This place offers its visitors an extensive coastline full of incredible and beautiful beaches. Fuengirola has been a tourist destination for many years, which is why it now features countless services and a great tourism infrastructure, among which we can count equestrian centers, golf courses, restaurants and leisure centers.

Striking the right balance between expat convenience and Spanish authenticity, Fuengirola delivers an intriguing melting pot of cultures. So it is not uncommon to see British, Irish, Nordic and German inhabitants mingling with the local Spanish population. In conclusion, a cultural cocktail that is almost unique on the Coast.

But in this occasion, we are not going to focus on the bars and the mixing of cultures, we are just going to take a look of some interesting places to visit while visiting Fuengirola.

SOHAIL CASTLE

The Sohail Castle is located at the mouth of the Fuengirola River, atop a small isolated hill that rises 38 meters above sea level. This magnificent geographical location allowed, even in ancient times, the continuous population of the hillsides by Punics and Romans. The imposing Castle offers some lovely views over the surrounding bay, and is the venue for summer concerts by top Spanish and international artists

ROMAN SETTLEMENT ARCHEOLOGICAL PARK

The discovery of this roman settlement was made in the 1970s. It is an important archeological site that includes a salting facility, a pottery workshop and baths, dated between the first and fifth century AD.
Close to the salting facility, from which the pillars are preserved, and next to the pottery workshop, there is a building for baths where we can appreciate the architectural details and the decoration of a private bath in a Roman villa. The interpretation center of the Roman baths rebuilds, at scale, the different rooms inside the Roman baths.

BIOPARC FUENGIROLA

This place is famous for having a natural setting for the animals. Here you will be able to enjoy a tropical forest with rivers, exuberant vegetation and waterfalls given that its focus is preserving tropical species and others adapted to the tropical forest habitat, mainly from Asia, Africa and the islands of the Indo-Pacific.
That is why you will be able to see Nile crocodiles, lemurs playing around an ancient Baobab tree or the Sumatra tigers bathing next to the Angkor Wat.
The zoo provides a home for a wide selection of species, does some sterling conservation work and is a wonderfully distracting day out for all the family.

So, even the summer already ended and we going towards the winter, Fuengirola has much to offer than just beach, sun and party. The cultural offer it´s growing everyday and it is a city worth visiting no matter when.

As we mentioned at the beginning Fuengirola is a nice cocktail of cultures and people from all over the world. So, if you are one of those visitors or just moved to this amazing city do not forget that you can exchange your currency at our Eurochange office in the city. As we always say we are not just there to offer you great rates to exchange your pounds, dollars, crowns, etc. to euro, we are also there to give you the biggest smile and the best treatment we can. Check out location and come visit, say hi, and exchange your currency with us, or at least stop by and say hi.

Zaragoza: the traditional fiestas del Pilar

We visit Zaragoza and the traditional Fiestas del Pilar

We arriving to the end of September, and by this time most of us are back to the daily routine. We already forgot about the sunny days, the swimming and the free time. But before our mindset goes into low battery mode here is something to get you exited. Its almost October! And what happens in October? Ok Halloween, but that’s towards the end. Ok ok Oktoberfest, but that already started in mid-September. I am talking about Las fiestas del Pilar, yeah plural, las fiestas not just la fiesta and why is that? That is because the celebrations spread all over the Spanish country and though many days. But we are going to focus just on the Spanish city where the tradition is bigger… Zaragoza.

For ten days in the month of October, Zaragoza is bursting with festivities and filled with fun. The capital of Aragon becomes a city of joy, imaginative, colourful and, above all, it displays its well-earned reputation for being a city which always gives a warm welcome to visitors.

Just in case some of you don’t know, the name of La Virgen del Pilar is no other than one of the many representations of the Virgin Mery. The holiday dates back to 40 AD when, in an effort to spread Christianity, St. James the Apostle came to Zarazoga. It is believed that St. James the Apostle was asked by the Virgin Mary, who is located upon a marble pillar, to build a church on the exact land in which he was standing upon. As a result, we now have the Basilica del Pilar which initially was designed in the year 1681 and wasn’t finished until well into the 20th century. The pillar in which Mary stood upon is located within the Holy Chapel, also known as the Capilla Santa, of the Basilica. Although the official day in which the holiday is celebrated is October 12, be prepared to celebrate with a week’s worth of dancing and music while basking in Spain’s rich history and culture.

Thorough the week there are many traditions and events like The Dawn Rosary, the offering of tons of fruit to the virgin on the 13th or the procession of the Rosario de Cristal, but we going to tell you a bit more about the main act, the big even, the famous grand homage to the patroness of the Hispanic world: The Flower Offering

the Flower Offering, takes place on October 12.  From early in the morning until late in the evening, hundreds of thousands of citizens of Aragon and from all over the world congregate in the main and adjacent streets of the city in order to place their flowers before the Virgen del Pilar and pay homage to the Patroness of the Hispanic World. At the endo of the day, between six and eight million flowers have been placed creating a scene which is unique in the world.
The Flower Offering has become a tradition passed on from parents to children and is an example of mass participation. However, it is also an example of tradition renewed.
From early in the morning, hundreds of thousands of citizens from Aragon, other Autonomous Communities and from all over the world, dressed in their regional costumes (the only requisite to participate), walk in procession in front of the Virgen and place at her feet millions of flowers brought as homage to the Patroness of the people of Aragon and of the community of the Hispanic World. All day long, one can sense in the air the joy of those who come to render their small homage in the form of a flower to the Virgen del Pilar.
The beginnings of the Offering must be sought in the forties of the XX century when the Chapel of the Virgen was decorated for feast days. Carnations, roses and spikenards scent the air of the Holy Chapel. However, it was in 1958, when Luis Gómez Laguna was Mayor of Zaragoza that the Councilor for Festivals, Manuel Rodeles, added a popular, participatory act to the program, similar to the flower offerings held in eastern Spain.

As we mentioned before, people from all over the world visit Spain to celebrate this tradition which is the same day that the Hispanic Day (this is a small spoiler of next post). But this week we focused on Zaragoza, and all this beautiful city has to offer. And of course, Zaragoza also offers you the chance of exchanging money in one of our Eurochange offices. So, if you are one of the many visitors that come from all over the world to enjoy these traditional holydays, please visit us to exchange your currency into euros. As always, we will provide you not just with incredible exchanges rates, but also with the biggest smile and more during this special time in our city of Zaragoza.
