New Swedish Krone notes manufacturing

Goodbye to the old notes

On October 1, 2015 the National Bank of Sweden began issuing new banknotes of 20, 50, 200 and 1,000 Swedish krone. The 200 Krone was a new addition, since there was no edition in the previous series of banknotes.

The new notes of 20, 50 and 1,000 will be circulating with the old notes until the 30th June 2016. Until that time comes, in Sweden they may use either the old or new notes. The 100 and 500 Swedish Krone of the old series remain valid as yet not been issued new versions.

Important information about the change in Swedish Krone

However for reasons beyond Eurochange, from now we can not exchange 20, 50 and 1,000 Krone notes of the old series. We can only accept the new banknotes of these denominations. If you remember during these months are traveling to Sweden, you can buy Swedish Krone that you need at Eurochange and also exchange back any spare notes when you get back from your trip. Just remeber that they must be 20, 50 and 1,000 Krones of the new series.

When you make purchases try and make sure when you recieve change back that they are the new denominations or 100 and 500 krones which still remain valid.

What if you still have the old series notes?

The way to change notes that are no longer in circulation is to go directly to the National Bank of Sweden, fill out a form and there they change the note.

You can also request to change notes on the website of the National Bank of Sweden and send the notes by mail but this requires a bank identification number that only Swedish citizens have.

If none of these options is valid for you, you can contact the Swedish Consulate in Spain, maybe there they can find out about how to make the process.

The Swedish Kroner

Swedish Kroner information

The Krone is the official currency of Sweden since 1873 as a result of a monetary union between Sweden, Norway and Denmark. When this union was dissolved with the start of the World War I, the three countries decided to keep calling their currencies with the same name. For this reason we have the Swedish krone, the Norwegian krone and the Danish krone. The ISO 4217 code  is SEK.

In 2011, the Riksbank (Central Bank of Sweden) prepared a contest that was held in 2012 to design the new banknotes. The winning piece was "Kulturresan" (Cultural trip) Göran Osterlund. In this cultural series of banknotes, appears different relevant characters of the Swedish culture. For example, in the note of 100 krone we will see the image of Greta Garbo, an actress that was born in Stockholm. Another novelty is that they will introduce a new note of 200 krone to facilitate payments and change in amounts of between 100 and 500 krone.

These new notes will come to light in 2015 and the old notes will no longer be in circulation progressively from that time.

The coins also are going to go through a modernization. The new krone coins will be smaller and lighter than the current ones while keeping the same layout. In addition they are also bringing back the coin of 2 krone that not been minted since 1971.

In the case of the coins, we will have to wait until 2016 to see them in circulation.

About 50-krona and 1,000-krona banknotes (SEK)

Information Swedish Krona

50-krona and 1,000-krona banknotes without a foil strip became invalid after 31 December 2013

After 31 December 2013, you are no longer able to pay with the older versions of the 50-krona and 1,000-krona banknotes that do not have foil strips. The reason these notes are no longer legal tender is that the Riksbank wishes to reduce the number of banknotes and different versions of banknotes prior to the introduction of the new series of banknotes and coins, which will start in 2015.

28 February is the last day that the banks can redeem the notes

Until 28 February 2014 you will still be able to deposit the invalid banknotes in a bank account. After 28 February 2014 the Riksbank can redeem the invalid banknotes, for an administration fee of SEK 100.
