Safety tips for travelers

Summer time, that means millions and millions of tourists traveling around the world. Even nowadays we have plenty information on the net, and most people already know what to do and the safety measures to take while traveling, at Eurochange we thought it would be a good gesture to share with you some travel safety tips for your summer vacations.

The media usually blow out of proportion and scares people about some destinations being “unsafe”, and it is true that some places have more risk than other, but the #1 advice to any traveler it´s: Be responsible.

The major concern about safety its always about the possibility of getting robbed, and here are some tips to avoid that, or at least, make it more difficult.

  • Always make sure you know where you going: Asking for directions it’s a common practice, and most time it´s harmless but, sometimes can be problematic if you ask the wrong person. If you visiting a popular touristic city, make sure you ask the appropriate person, check for tourist’s centers, ask in your hotel lobby or to the concierge, and there is always the police. But if you are wellinformed, you won’t need to ask anybody and you will be your own guide thru the city.

  •  Locate all your belongings: Make sure where you have everything at every moment. We are used to walk around out hometowns careless, placing our wallets in our back pockets, having a backpack full with stuff, and showing off our nice watch or jewelry. All those are a big NO NO while you traveling. Make sure your wallet it’s on a spot hard to reach to avoid pickpocket, use a lock for your backpack and have only the necessary things and, while being on crowded places, place your backpack on your chest. Nice and flashy Jewelry can attract robbers, if you really don’t need it, leave it at home. Other potential measures to protect yourself are to split your money in different places, have a safe at your hotel room, have a decoy wallet and have as small cash with you if you can.
  • Protect yourself “online”: Do not join unknown or free networks, you don’t know who is on the other side. Nowadays we have our lives in our laptops or phones, this is really convenient for our daily life but carries some risks. Make sure you have your online purchases protected with a double confirmation via sms or email. Don’t pay with you credit card anywhere that seem untrustworthy and always make sure you don’t lose your card from your sight.

Last but not least, and referring to our website, be careful where you exchange your money. Try to find always an official money exchange office that holds all the licenses. In some countries, its common to pay in another currency other than the one official at the stores or shops, be careful with the exchange rate they give you. And of course, if you come to Spain make sure you visit us on one of our many locations around the country. We will not just give you amazing rated to exchange your money, we also will treat each and every one of you as an special and individual client.

King Charles III Sterling pound Banknotes

King Charles III Sterling pound Banknotes

The date is already set on June 5th the new British pound banknotes featuring King Charles III will be released. That may see like a regular even but with the release many questions come to people mind. We are going to try to answer them for you.

What will happen to the actual polymer Banknotes featuring Queen Elizabeth?

Don’t worry, all the actual polymer notes featuring King Elizabeth will remain legal tender, you will have no problem to pay with them or exchange them at any business. So, in case you would like to exchange British pounds into euros it wont matter if your pounds are the old version or the new one, both will have the same value.

Why and how will both versions coexist?

This happened before many times in history and with many currencies but maybe this case is different. Usually, one note replaces the old one but, on this case, let us start telling you that as right now, the Bank of England will only issue the new version featuring King Charles III to replace damaged or really old notes. So is not like they are replacing every note they have, just those that need to be reprinted.

Also, both currencies are legal tender so they will coexist until the old notes go out of circulation, for that even is not even a date set, so won’t be a problem for a while.

Do they have the same value?

Of course, both polymer notes have the same value to pay or to be exchanged. For many months the UK is being preparing for this event. Most ATM machines already have new updates to be able to handle both versions. Companies have been updating their systems in order to detect and accept this new version on automatic machines as could be vending machines. Everything is set for this release.

What about exchanging British pounds in Spain?

As you already know, and this post is another proof, at Eurochange we are up with the times and aware of all currents event involving currencies. This means that all our offices are informed of the latest currency news. All your British pounds will be welcomed if you want to exchange pounds to euro, no matter if they are featuring Queen Elizabeth or King Charles III.

And one more thing… At Eurochange we even exchange the old sterling pound paper notes. So don’t hesitate to come visit us at any of our many locations or contact us thru our customer service.

Sustainable Gastronomy Day

June 18th is the “Sustainable Gastronomy Day”.

June 18th is the “Sustainable Gastronomy Day”. What´s Sustainable Gastronomy and what does it have to do with Eurochange´s Blog? Let´s see it in the next lines.

Sustainable Gastronomy is a concept referring to a way of cooking that cares about the ingredient's origin, and the impact it has on the environment. 60% of the risk factors causing sickness are a consequence from bad nourishment, and that’s directly related to our planet´s health.

The main purpose of celebrating this day is to raise awareness about the impact of our actions on the environment, including the simple act of choosing one product or another. These concepts seem basic and logical to be implemented on today’s society by countries, but it is not as easy as it seems. A study called “Plates, Pyramids and Planet” showed that only 4 countries included sustainability on their dietary guideline. From all the 215 countries participating on that study, only 83 offered official guidelines about healthy diets.

Only Germany, Brazil, Sweeden and Qatar have a long-term vision and offer guidelines where diets, health and sustainability are mixed together. The Netherlands and the UK are taking some steps towards including sustainability on their dietary guidelines as well, but not as advanced as the 4 mentioned previously. For the rest, only next to a third (83) offer tips to the population based on the dietary habits.

Since a while ago, and growing every day, gastronomic tourism is increasing in popularity, and “foodies” plan their vacations or travels around the word based on gastronomic adventures. And this is how we found Belém.

Belém, Creative Gastronomic City by the UNESCO.

UNESCO recognised the compromise by the popular brazilian city with the creativity as the engine for an urban sustainable development. In this particular case the recognition is based on it´s gastronomy, and how they set some actions to help social inclusion and cultural revitalisation.

Belém promotes the use of native ingredients and local products, while works on eliminating the middle man from the production chain, linking small producers straight the the consumers. Furthermore, Belém its a pioneer in the "slow food" field, showing everybody how to lead a process of social transformation through a voluptuous, tasty and filled with variety gastronomy.

Belém it´s way more than all that: it is also consider the ecological tourism capital of the world. With a 1,5 million citizens, has some of the most beautiful fairy tale´s landscapes, a beautiful and historical old town clearly influenced by the Portuguese architecture, and a high social and cultural lifestyle.

If you wish to plan your next trip in order to enjoy all the gastronomical offer Belém has to offer, you have a whole year until the next world´s Sustainable Gastronomy Day in Brazil. But you only need between 24 and 48 hours to get your Brazilian Reales on your closest Eurochange office.

Getaway to Scotland and where to buy Scottish pounds

Scotland’s Must-See Places Tour

Now that the good weather is here and the warmth is one of the best times to travel to Scotland. There are many essential places that you cannot miss. Enjoy a weekend as a couple discovering the spectacular landscapes of Scotland. Travel at your leisure between its lakes and mountains, discover its dramatic castles and stroll through the medieval streets of Edinburgh, one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Renting a car and touring the island is the best way to enjoy it, but keep in mind that in Scotland you drive on the left. You can start with…

1. EILEAN DONAN CASTLE

This castle is one of the jewels and one of the most essential places to visit in Scotland. Located in the Highlands, on a small island in Loch Duich, it is only accessible by a small stone bridge, which makes it even more scenic.

In addition, this castle was the setting for several films, including Los Inmortales or Braveheart and is the image of Cardhu Scotch whisky.

2. NEIST POINT ON THE ISLE OF SKYE

This lighthouse, situated less than an hour's drive from Portree. We are talking about Neist Point, one of the great attractions of Skye. It is located at the westernmost end of the island and is located facing the sea on a beautiful cliff, a large arm of land against which the ocean waters break energetically. Arriving at Neist Point, we find an area where we can leave the vehicle and start the journey to the lighthouse. Neist Point is today a building with history, however, it is still working and performing its role as a ship guide. It no longer needs activation and maintenance by a lighthouse keeper, because it is remotely controlled from Edinburgh.

3. LOCH NESS AND URQUHART CASTLE

Urquhart Castle is the third most visited attraction in Scotland. This fortress on the shores of Loch Ness is an incredible place, marked by history and dominating the spectacular landscape of the Great Glen ("The Great Valley").

Every year hundreds of thousands of visitors come to Loch Ness in search of the myth of Nessie, the Monster. Whether or not its existence is true, this sea creature is surrounded by a halo of mystery and continues to fascinate even though it has not been seen in almost 100 years.

Loch Ness, narrow, with dark waters and 37 kilometers long, is a place given to mystery. If you want to get closer there are many points from which it is worth seeing. There is the town of Fort Augustus, which is at one end of it. There is also Drumnadrochit, a town in the middle of the lake where there are several interactive museums around the lake and the legend of the monster. Boat trips depart from both places. If you're really interested in Nessie, maybe it's worth going in.

4. SAINT ANDREWS

This old and historic university town on the North Sea is known worldwide as the birthplace of golf.

One of the most beautiful places is the cathedral, walking among its ruins surrounded by tombs from all eras transports you to other times. The best place from which to have an incredible panorama is from the top of the tower of the church of Sant Rule, with fantastic views of the cathedral, the city and the sea.

In addition to this area, the medieval city of Saint Andrews is full of charm with its shops, cafes and markets, so it is worth exploring it quietly and dedicating a day.

You can't leave without running along West Sands beach, recalling the mythical scene from Chariots of Fire, which was filmed there. As a curiosity we will tell you that next to the beach you will see people playing golf in the emblematic Old Course, one of the oldest in the world.

5. DUNNOTTAR CASTLE

Dunnottar Castle is one of the best places to visit in Scotland. This medieval castle located on the east coast leaves you in awe of its location, on a rocky precipice above the sea, a perfect place to defend against attacks, with the waves of the North Sea protecting it and only accessible by a narrow steep path.

The ruins are from the 14th and 15th centuries and were featured in the movie Hamlet. When you visit it you will be able to see the remains of what remains of the palace, the stables, the chapel… and other places that are just as impressive as the views from them.

The best photo and the most beautiful view is the one before arriving, with the perspective of the ruins of the castle on top of the summit and the sea in the background.

6. EDINBURGH

Edinburgh is a tremendously welcoming city with a great atmosphere throughout the pub area. This city, in which its fabulous Edinburgh Castle stands out, has two very different parts, the Old Town and the New Town. There are many things to see and do in Edinburgh, we would recommend in addition to visiting the castle, strolling along the Royal Mile and Circus Lane, visiting Holyrood Palace or going up Calton Hill to watch the sunset, with some great views of the city of Edinburgh. Nor can you leave the city without having a pint in one of its many taverns or a single malt whisky.

The official currency of Scotland is the Scottish pound, both sterling and Scottish pounds are valid there, if you are going to visit Scotland we recommend that you bring some cash in pounds. You can make the change at Eurochange, go to our website and make your reservation or call us at 615403877 and our operators will guide you if you have any questions.

How to save money in London?

We tell you the best tricks that most tourists do not know to save on your

If you are planning a trip to London and you are looking for tips to save during your stay, in this article we tell you the best tricks that most tourists do not know and that aim to lower costs on their London holidays.

According to statistics, London is one of the most expensive destinations in Europe. The most expensive thing about London is transport, food and shopping.

1. SAVE MONEY ON TRANSPORTATION

To save on transportation for the transfer from the airport to the city you have to buy the ticket well in advance. A normal train ticket from Stansed to London that is purchased in advance saves more than 65% and the same happens from other airports.

The subway is another transport in which you can save money, instead of buying a single ticket, it is best to get the Oyster Card, with which the trips will cost you less.

Unless you have to move from one end of the city to another we recommend that instead of the metro you use the bus, if you have to do little travel it will be cheaper and it will take less time to reach your destination.

2. EATING CHEAP IN LONDON

In London there are many supermarkets such as Asda, Tesco or Sansbury that are extremely cheap and where you can find a wide variety of products at low prices. In these supermarkets you will find the "Meal Deal", they consist of a sadwich, a drink and a snack or dessert to choose from and all this at a price of between 3 and 4 pounds. These "Meal Deal" are ideal for food.

If, on the other hand, you prefer to go out to lunch or dinner at restaurants and you are going to drink water, we recommend you to order the "Tap water", basically it consists of tap water and they will serve it with lemon slices and of course it is free.

One way to eat rich and cheap is to eat at the flea markets. Among the most recommended markets for cheap dining are Brixton, Brick Lane and Broadway Market.

3. SAVE WHEN YOU GO SHOPPING

If you travel to London you will surely be wanting to go shopping, here you can also save money and we tell you how to do it. First of all you must be attentive to the sales and discounts. Unlike here, which we have twice a year, in London there are also mid-season sales and sometimes you can find real bargains. We recommend you not to use the main shopping streets such as Oxford Street or Canarby Street to do your shopping as they are the most expensive areas. We recommend that you visit East End, in this shopping area you will find the same products but at half price. There are also stores called "Charity Shops" that are charity shops where you will find all kinds of clothes and second-hand objects, there are garments for 1, 2 or 3 pounds.

Finally, as always, we recommend that before traveling you take the currency from here, that is, that you change your euros to pounds in EUROCHANGE enter our website and make the reservation for the collection in store or come to any store with currency sales service of our network and take your pounds at the best price and without surprises. And for changes over 750 euros we offer you the repurchase service. Call us at the Customer Service Center 615403877 and our operators will be happy to answer any questions.

Spectacular destinations to spend New Year’s Eve

We show you the best destinations to spend a wonderful New Year’s Eve

How many times have you spent the New Year at home with the family? Have you ever thought about leaving traditions aside and taking a getaway and spending New Year's Eve abroad? There are many interesting options and countless European cities that are spectacular on these dates, although before preparing the trip we must see the type of restrictions that the destination country has due to Covid-19.

For all those who want to do something really different and spectacular, we propose a unique adventure, spend New Year's Eve in the desert. You can take a night ride on a camel under the light of the stars. You can do this activity if you travel to Dubai, where the best time to visit is now, from November to April. In Dubai, in addition to the desert, you can also visit the Deira neighborhood, which is the oldest in the city. The Jumeirah Mosque is the only one in the city that accepts non-Muslim visitors and is another of the most beautiful places to see in Dubai.

Another of the more adventurous proposals to do on these dates is to visit the glaciers and perpetual snows, go on a dog sled tour, take an excursion to the Arctic Circle from Lapland, visit Santa Claus and see the Aurora Borealis.

If what you want is snow but you don't want to go that far, another option is to spend New Year's Eve in a European ski resort, we suggest The Swiss Alps, where you will spend a "White Christmas" in the warmth of pleasant and bucolic shelters and Mountain hotels at the foot of Mont Blanc.

If you are not so intrepid and are looking for something calmer, you cannot miss New York, which at this time has a special charm, you can say goodbye to 2021 in Times Square, skate on the ice rinks of Central Park and see the impressive Christmas tree of the Rockefeller Center.

Whenever you prepare a trip, and especially at this time when we are going through the Covid-19 pandemic, you have to inform yourself about the entry requirements to the country, although in some destinations the measures have been relaxed, in others they have been reduced and quite a lot. . You should also think about the currency they have at the destination and anticipate so as not to be surprised. From Eurochange we offer you a range of more than 45 currencies from around the world. Enter our website and make the purchase and in 24/48 hours you will have your money at home.

New Year in Costa Rica and where to buy currency online

We take you on a tour of Costa Rica, places that you can´t miss and where t

Now that the Christmas holidays are approaching, many of us choose warm destinations where we can lose ourselves for a few days and disconnect. This week we are talking about Costa Rica, where there are no hard entry requirements due to Covid-19, they simply ask us to complete the digital form called Health Pass and contact a Travel Policy, although the latter is not mandatory if we have the guideline complete vaccination.

The best time to visit Costa Rica is in December and January, being the high season and the hottest and sunniest months.

Costa Rica offers sun and beach, offers adventure, seeing all kinds of animals or incredible vostas with a rich cultural heritage.

We recommend you visit San José, its capital, which has many treasures to show. Visit the National Theater, symbol of the city. The Central Park, the oldest space in San José and the Metropolitan Cathedral.

Tortuga Island is the paradise of Costa Rica, 4 hours from the San José capital. There is no restaurant or hotel in it since it is a totally natural environment. To access it you must hire a day tour or a private excursion.

Cartago is another of the places that you cannot miss, get to know its spectacular Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels, the symbol of the city, walk through its beautiful streets and its historic center.

One of the essentials of the trip to Costa Rica that you cannot miss is visiting its famous volcanoes, the Irazú volcano is the highest in the country at 3432 meters of altitude, it is active although since 1994 there has been no eruption. The Turrialba volcano is the second highest, it is very popular as it sometimes expels smoke and ash.

One of the most visited places in Costa Rica is the Manuel Antonio National Park, it has fascinating flora and fauna. You can walk its trails and enjoy all the animals that you can find, from sloth bears, monkeys, birds and reptiles.

One of the best beaches in Costa Rica is Playa Manuel Antonio, it has many areas, some quiet and others very crowded with tourism. You will find numerous bars and restaurants since the entrance of food is restricted to sandwiches and fruit to avoid the spillage of plastic and to take care of the environment.

Finally, we recommend you visit Corcovado National Park, one of the most biodiverse areas in the world. To access it, it is mandatory to do it with a guide, it is easy to get lost because the trails are full of nature and the rising tides. Touring this park you can find jaguars, crocodiles, iguanas, parrots and all kinds of exotic birds.

Christmas traditions around the world

NULL

This is the most wonderful time of year, for a few weeks the world is impregnated with the magic of Christmas. It does´nt matter if you celebrate the holidays for religious reasons or for other reasons, be that as it may, here we leave you a series of Christmas customs to make these dates more special.

  • GIANT LANTERN FESTIVAL, PHILIPPINES.
The festival of the giant lanterns (Ligligan Parul Sampernandu) has been celebrated for more than 100 years. Every year they are celebrated on the Saturday before Christmas Eve in the city of San Fernando, the capital of Christmas in the Philippines. People from all over the world flock to see the festival. Eleven villages (barangays) participate in it. There is a great rivalry to see who builds the best lantern. At first the lanterns were small and were made with hapon paper (Japanese paper) and a lighted candle. Today the festival has evolved and there are lanterns of more than 12 meters with floral shapes or religious symbols. Now the lanterns are lit by bulbs that create kaleidoscopic patterns and dance to the music.

  • GÄVLE'S GOAT, SWEDEN.
The Yule goat is one of the oldest symbols of Christmas in Sweden. Since 1966, the 13-meter tall Yule goat has been built in the center of Gävle Castle Square for Advent. It has also become a tradition to try to burn it. In their 55-year history, they have managed to burn the goat 26 times, the most recent was in 2013.

  • KRAMPUS, AUSTRIA.
Everyone knows Santa Claus, the man in charge of bringing gifts for Christmas. In Austria, children are visited by Santa Claus but also by Krampus, a demon who goes through the streets scaring the staff, picks up children who have misbehaved and carries them away in his sack. During the first week of December, on the eve of Saint Nicholas Day, young people dressed as Krampus scare children by ringing their chains and bells.

  • SAINT NICHOLAS DAY, GERMANY
December 6 is Saint Nicholas Day, a very special day in Germany especially for children. Nicolás travels by donkey on the night of December 6 and leaves small gifts, coins, chocolates, toys … in the shoes of German children who have behaved well. For this enormous work, Nicolás needs the help of a page called Ruperto, some believe that it was a small demon who was defeated by Saint Nicolás himself, that is why he presented himself chained to the saint and this page is in charge of giving them some " spanking ”children who have not behaved well.

  • YOUNG PEOPLE FROM YULE, ICELAND
During the 13 days leading up to Christmas, 13 rogues appear in Iceland. The Yule youths visit children from all over the country during the 13 nights before Christmas, they arrive one at a time each day until Christmas morning, which is when, in the same way that they came, they leave. In this way, Christmas begins on December 12 and ends on January 6. On each of those nights, the children leave their shoes by the window and the young people of Yule leave gifts for those who have behaved well. and rotten potatoes to those who have misbehaved. Each of them has a name according to the characteristic that defines it and they are very naughty.

Problems with your flight? Claim and receive a compensation

Claim for your flight and receive a compensation

Flying can be a fantastic experience in a fast and comfortable conveyance. But sometimes things get complicated, the flight is delayed, or even canceled, the suitcase gets lost,… And that's where a pleasant trip starts to turn into a nightmare. But complaining about problems with your flight has an easy solution. We tell you how to do it.

Claim the airline

If you have time and patience, you can undertake the claim on your own. The process can become very tedious because airlines ignore passengers. Sometimes claims end up in court and, as an individual, it can be a bit scary to face an airline in court (we don't even talk about when that company is in another country).

Although compensation is established by law and depends on the distance of the flight (ranging from € 250 to € 600), airlines don’t usually easily admit that the delay is due to an internal cause and don’t compensate users easily. So if you decide to take this route, we wish you good luck and we ask you to tell us how it went.

Claim through a claims agency

This imposing process made travelers choose not to claim their rights. However, there are already several companies that are dedicated to it for you.

Today we present you Air Help, a company specialized in claiming your compensation for (among others) delays in your flights. The procedure is very simple, just follow the steps that are marked on their website. Of course, you will have to have at hand the tickets and the identifications of all the people whose flights you are going to claim. Once all the documentation is uploaded, they get to work to formalize your claim and send you notifications by mail so you know the status.

As we have told you, sometimes the claim ends up in a court, but they also take care of all the paperwork.

What does Air Help get out of all this?

The company gets a commission on the amount of your claim which is (as of the date of this post) 35% for the claim plus 15% if legal action must be taken.

It may seem like a high commission, but considering that most of the passengers have suffered delays and have not claimed anything at all, with 65% we already have more than we would have without claiming. And all with a simple process in which you don’t have to pay a fee in advance. Just send your data and wait for them to resolve your claim.

Do I need a Vaccination Passport to travel in 2021?

Do I need a Vaccination Passport to travel in 2021?

With the start of the COVID-19 vaccination campaign, many new questions are emerging. Some of them still unanswered, but some of the unknowns are being cleared up. The one that most worries people who want or must travel in 2021 is whether it will be necessary to have a Vaccination Passport to travel in 2021. And the answer is… there is no answer to date.

IATA plans the creation of an application for vaccines and medical certificates

Vaccine Passport to travel after COVID

In the same way that there are destinations asking travelers for negative PCR tests to allow entry to countries or regions, there are those who demand that Vaccine Passports be issued to prove whether a person is vaccinated against COVID and to be able to move freely. And this idea has its adherents and detractors because it also has advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages and disadvantages of the Vaccine Passport

The main advantage that creating a Vaccine Passport would have is that citizens would be protected by ensuring that travelers entering and leaving the country have been vaccinated. Supporters of the COVID Vaccine Passport argue that, in the same way that freedom of movement is currently limited by requesting a negative PCR, a vaccination document will have to be included in the coming months so that vaccinated people do not have to undergo the diagnostic test.

On the other hand, the main drawback of the Vaccine Passport is the limitation of the freedoms of those who have not been vaccinated. And, in addition to the detractors who will not want to be vaccinated, there is a part of the population with severe allergies that will not be able to be vaccinated. There are already those who warn of the danger of creating this division in citizenship after hearing proposals such as that of the Prime Minister of Israel to allow access to Shopping Centers and other establishments only to vaccinated people.

What most countries seem to agree on is the need to take joint measures, so that the requirements are the same and there are no unilateral decisions. In addition, it would be necessary to develop the necessary technology to be able to issue Vaccine Passports that could not be falsified and were valid throughout the world.

Some international airlines reported a few weeks ago that they are expected to require travelers to provide proof of having received the vaccine. For this they would have to change their conditions of sale. But not only that. This decision could not be made by airlines unilaterally, they must have government authorization to do so. For its part, IATA (International Air Transport Association) is developing an APP, IATA Travel Pass, to contain health and vaccination information.

While the issue is being debated, the mass vaccination process follows different rhythms in the different countries that have already had access to the vaccine and there is still no vaccination date for the majority of the world's population. We will still have to wait a few weeks (or months) to know what will happen. Meanwhile, stay safe!
