Groundhog Day

Another American tradition is Groundhog Day, celebrated February 2. Famous because of the Bill Murray movie, this day has it´s own history and it’s a real celebration. On February 2, 1887 in Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney was where this tradition started. The tradition states that, if the groundhog comes out of his hole and runs back inside as soon, he gets scared by his own shadow, then it means there will be six more weeks of winter. On the other hand, if the rodent just chills because there is no shadow that means an early spring this year. 

Saint Valentine

There is no need to explain what is Saint Valentines Day. Every February 14th love is all around, the official day of the year for love. But, why is it February 14th? There are many theories but we will just mention 3.
The first one, and probably the most popular, is about the pagan celebration of Lupercalia a roman celebration to fertility in which couples were pair out in order to procreate. 
The second one and maybe less controversial stays that by the middle of February it was bird´s maiden season in England and France, which lead to choose this as the day of love. 
A third one comes back to the beginning of this post; February is basically a slow month so with commercial purposes the tradition was set on the middle of the slowest month of the year to increase sales.

Today we start a new month, July, and probably it’s the most American month. The celebration of the 4^th of July its known worldwide. The biggest surprise it´s that you may have heard that Independence Day it is celebrated on July 4 because that’s the day the Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence, but that’s not technically true! Although the Declaration was adopted on July 4, 1776, it wasn’t signed by most people until a month later.

According to the History Channel, there is a message written on the back of the declaration of independence, but it´s not a map, a simple message is written upside-down across the bottom of the signed document  that reads, "Original Declaration of Independence dated 4th July 1776."

According to the same article, no one knows who wrote this or when, but it was believed to have been added as a label during the years of the Revolutionary War when parchment was frequently rolled up for transport.

In 1958, a history teacher assigned a class assignment to redesign the national flag as both Alaska and Hawaii neared statehood.

Robert G. Heft, who was 16 at the time, designed a new flag using the old 48-star flag and $2.87 worth of blue cloth and white iron-on material. His design earned him a B-minus to which he challenged by sending it to Washington D.C. to be considered by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

1. Request the ESTA

Citizens of the countries of the European Union (and some more) do not have to apply for a visa to enter the United States but it is necessary to apply for a travel authorization (ESTA).

It is a very simple procedure and, although on the web they recommend ordering it at least 72 hours in advance, we recommend that it be the first procedure so that we do not forget. In addition, it is common for flight companies to remind us via e-mail when purchasing flights. So, as soon as you have the tickets, you can request it.

How is ESTA requested to enter the United States?

To request the ESTA you will have to access the official website of requests. You can make the request individually or for a group (2 or more people). 2. Obtain the international driving license

Obviously, if you don’t rent a car, it is not necessary to request it, but if you are going to drive during your trip, you must have it. Although most rental companies are not going to ask for it, it is mandatory to take it since, if the police asks you to stop and  they request it, they can fine you for not taking it. Why? Because the Spanish driver's license is only valid for the countries of the European Union and those of the European Economic Area in addition to others with which there is a bilateral treaty. Among which is not the United States.

So you know, if you want to drive and avoid problems, ask for your international permit.

How do you apply for the international driver's license?

3. Mobile phone and connections

We go from an almost desert environment to a park located in the south of Alaska that remains a good part of the year covered with snow. In this park you will find Mount Denali, the highest peak in North America. This National Park is located in the State of California, halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. There are three lines of "Cable cars" from where you can cross centric streets and go up and down the famous slopes of the city.

The prison received in its interior famous prisoners and hosted numerous shoots of Hollywood. Hug a redwood

The redwoods are very long-lived trees (they live between 2000 and 3000 years), very tall (more than 100 meters from the surface) and very thick (around 7 or 8 meters in diameter). They are also characteristic species of the west coast of the United States. One of the spaces where you can walk among these millenary trees is Muir Woods Park, about 15 km north of the city.
