About the Argentine Peso
The Argentine peso is the country’s official currency. Its international code is ARS, and each peso is divided into 100 centavos.
Banknotes and Coins of the Argentine Peso
Due to high inflation, the most commonly used banknotes now are the 1,000, 2,000, and 10,000 peso notes, with the 1,000 peso bill being the most prevalent in circulation.
New high-denomination notes were introduced in 2024: the 10,000 peso note in May and the 20,000 peso note later in the year. The 10,000 peso bill features Manuel Belgrano and María Remedios del Valle, while the 20,000 peso note carries Juan Bautista Alberdi.
Commonly used coins include 1, 2, 5, and 10 peso denominations, while centavo coins are rarely used due to the rising cost of goods.
Do I Need Cash in Argentina?
Yes, definitely. Although card payments are accepted in major cities, cash remains essential for markets, public transport, and rural areas. Given inflation, even small purchases can require high-denomination bills
