About the Australian Dollar
The Australian Dollar is the official currency of Australia, the Christmas Islands, Coco Islands, Norfolk Island and the independent Pacific Island states: Nauru, Tuvalu and Kiribati Islands. Its ISO 4217 code is AUD and although its symbol is the dollar sign “$” is often represented preceded by an A “A$” (Australian Dollar) to differentiate it from other types dollars. One Dollar is divided into 100 cents.
History of the currency of Australia
The Australian Dollar was introduced in 1966. Until then the legal currency was the Australian Pound. The first Dollar banknotes were 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 dollars. Years later 50 and 100 notes were included and the 1 and 2 notes were replaced for coins. The issue of the Australian Dollar is regulated by the Reserve Bank of Australia and coins by the Royal Australian Mint.
Australian Dollar notes and coins
The Australian dollar banknotes issued by the Bank of Australia are 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 Dollars. Between 1992 and 1996, banknotes printed on cotton paper were replaced by the polymer, so that at present, the dollars in circulation are all made of this more durable and more difficult to counterfeit material.
On the obverse of the $ 5 notes we can see an image of Queen Elizabeth II and on the back the Parliament. In the other denominations appear relevant characters of the country: a man in one face and a woman in the other. The characters are: Dame Mary Gilmore and AB 'Banjo' Paterson on the $ 10 note, Mary Reibey and the Reverend John Flynn on the $ 20 note, David Unaipon and Edith Cowan on the note of 50 and Dame Nellie Melba and Sir John Monash on the 100 Australian Dollars banknote.
At present the Bank of Australia is renewing the notes and there are already three new ones: the ones of 5, 10, 20 and 50 Dollars. These notes are also made of polymer but incorporate new security measures. The characters that appear in each denomination are maintained and the designs are quite similar.
The renewed note of 100 Australian Dollars will be put in circulation in 2020.
LEGAL TENDER AUSTRALIAN DOLLAR NOTES
The Australian Dollar has 8 coins minted in the Royal Australian Mint: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents and 1 and 2 Dollars. On the head of the coins appears the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. On the tail, elements of Australian nature and tradition and culture are represented: the feathertail glider, the frilled-necked lizard, an echidna, a lyrebird, a platypus, the Commonwealth coat of arms, kangaroos or the portrait of a Australian aborigine (in addition to other various motives present in the 2 Dollar coins).
