About Canadian Dollar
The Canadian Dollar is the official currency in Canada. Their ISO 4217 code is CAD. Its symbol is $ however sometimes it’s represented with C$, to differentiate it from other types of dollars. One Dollar is divided into 100 cents. Canadian banknotes and coins are inscribed in English and French, the two official languages of the country.
History of the currency of Canada
It is the official currency since January 1st 1858, the year in which it was ordered that all accounts were to be made in dollars and the emission of the first banknotes and coins. This was when British Pound and the Spanish Dollar were abandoned, which was in circulation among the Canadian territories at the time. In 1871 a law was adopted to replace the coins of the provinces that made up Canada for a common currency.
In 2006 the Bank of Canada decided that, since 2011, the Canadian Dollar would be printed in polymer. This material makes the notes more durable and more difficult to counterfeit, and their manufacture is more ecological.
Canadian Dollar notes and coins
The Canadian Dollar notes are manufactured in the Bank of Canada and are 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 Dollars and their design evokes the spirit of innovation of the country. On one side appear the images of notable Prime Ministers of their history (Sir Wilfrid Laurier on the 5 dollar note, Sir John A. Macdonald on the 10 one, William Lyon Mackenzie King on the 50 note and Sir Robert Borden on the 100 one), as well as the image of the Queen of England on the $ 20 banknote. On the other side they commemorate their innovations in the fields of medicine and technology.
In the note of 5 Dollars they commemorate their contributions to the space race. In the 10th they represent the advances in the railway industry. On the $ 20 note his contribution in the First World War is remembered. In the 50 Dollars the relationship of the country with the Arctic is represented and in the one of 100 its contributions to medicine stand out.
Since the end of 2018 there is a new 10 Canadian Dollar note in which Viola Desmond appears and represents Human Rights and equality between people.
CANADIAN DOLLAR BANKNOTES IN CURCULATION
Canadian Dollar coins are manufactured in the Royal Mint. The amounts are 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 cents, 1 and 2 Dollars. On the head of the coin appears the image of the Queen of England and on the tail you can see different designs related to Canadian life and history. It is very common to see designs on nature with native animals.
The Canadian Mint issues, as is common, collector's coins. Some of these coins have color or even glow in the dark. One of them is in circulation. It is a 2 Dollars coin that has the image of a lake with the Northern Lights and glows in the dark. As it is a rare coin, they are not usually seen in circulation because citizens and tourists usually keep them.
