About the Icelandic Krona

The Icelandic Krona is the official currency of Iceland. Its ISO 4217 code is ISK and is abbreviated with the letters kr. Each Krona was divided into 100 aurar, but at present the smallest unit is 1 Krona.

History of Iceland's currency

The first Krona that arrived in Iceland was the same one that was used in Norway, Sweden and Denmark, since Iceland was a Danish territory, as part of the Scandinavian Monetary Union.

At the end of the First World War this monetary union was dissolved and Iceland became independent from Denmark, which began issuing the first Icelandic Krona in 1922.

In 1981 the Icelandic Krona was revalued and a new Krona was issued (which is still valid today) with an exchange rate of 100 to 1.

As of 2002, the aurar of the accounts was eliminated and the currencies of amounts less than 1 Koruna began to be withdrawn.

Due to the economic instability of the last decade, it has been speculated on the possibility that Iceland would enter the European Union or that it would join the Eurozone. There has also been a survey to the population about the possibility of acquiring a currency from another country (as is the case of Montenegro, where they use the Euro). But for the moment the Icelandic Government has announced that it will not carry out either of the two.

Icelandic Krona notes and coins

The Icelandic Krona notes are 500, 1,000, 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000 Kronas. Each of the denominations is dedicated to a relevant character of the Icelandic culture and tradition. Like the writer Jónas Hallgrímsson (poet, scholar, essayist and naturalist), Ragnheiður Jónsdóttir (third wife of Bishop Gísli Þorláksson), the painter Jóhannes S. Kjarval (considered one of Iceland's most famous artists), Bishop Brynjólfur Sveinsson or Jón Sigurðsson (leader of the Icelandic independence movement in the 19th century). On the back are images related to each of the characters represented on the notes.

The Icelandic Krona coins are 1, 5, 10, 50 and 100 Kronas. On the head appear the four guardian spirits of Iceland: a bull, a griffin, a dragon and a giant. These figures are also present in the coat of arms and each of them protects a part of the island. On the tail of the coins appear different species of typical marine animals: a cod, two dolphins, three cappellans, a green crab and a grouper fish.
