About the Jordanian Dinar
The Jordanian Dinar is the official currency of the Kingdom of Jordan. Its ISO 4217 code is JOD and its symbol is JD. The Dinar is divided into 100 piastres.
History of the Jordanian Currency
The Jordanian Dinar has been in circulation in this country since 1949. Previously, the Palestinian Pound was used, which was replaced by this new currency. Until 1992, the denominations used were fils, qirsh, dirhams and dinars, which were written in Arabic. Today, fils and dirhams are no longer used.
Jordanian Dinar banknotes and coins
The Jordanian Dinar notes in circulation today are 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50 Dinars. Since 1949 the Government of Jordan has introduced the different denominations of Dinars. In 1999 they introduced their highest denomination today, the 50 dinar note.
1 Dinar notes are green and on the front we can see the effigy of Husayn Ibn Ali, who was a sharif of Mecca and king of Hijaz. On the back we see a representation of the Arab Rebellion, an uprising against the Ottoman Empire started in 1916 by the Meccan sharif.
Red colour predominates on the 5 dinar notes. On the front we see the image of Abdullah I. He was the first ruler of Jordan and later emir and king of Transjordan. On the back is the Ma'an Palace, which was transformed from a railway building into the palace of King Abdullah I.
10 Dinar notes are blue and we can see the figure of Talal I, who was king of Jordan between 1951 and 1952. On the back, the image of the old parliament and the representation of the landscape of Wadi Rum, also known as The Valley of the Moon, can be seen.
20 dinar banknotes are green. On the front we find the effigy of Hussein I, King of Jordan and successor of his father, Talal I. On the back is the image of the Dome of the Rock, a monument located in Jerusalem which is very important for Muslim beliefs, because according to the legend, Muhammad ascended to heaven from the rock in the center of the Dome.
Finally, 50 dinar bills are predominantly brown. The image that appears on the front is that of Abdullah II, who succeeded his father Hussein I on the throne. On the back we see the rose window of Al Aqsa Mosque.
Jordanian Dinar coins are of 1, 2'5, 5 and 10 piastres and of 0'25, 0'5 and 1 Dinar.
