About Mexican Peso

The Mexican Peso is the official currency of Mexico. Its ISO 4217 code is MXN and its symbol is $. Each Peso is divided into 100 cents.

History of the currency of Mexico

At the time of the conquest, the Spaniards introduced the coins they carried and used them together with the forms of payment of the natives (cocoa, beads, feathers) or barter. In the 16th century, the first minting factory was inaugurated (Casa de moneda de México) and the Peso started to be minted. In 1925 the Bank of Mexico was created and would be in charge of issuing the tickets. In the 90s, due to inflation, the old Peso was replaced by the new Peso (this removed 000 to the old peso) for the implementation of the new Peso, a three-year implementation program was established. After three years, the country abandoned the adjective "New" and was renamed Peso, as we know it today.

The Mint and the Bank of Mexico have enjoyed prestige throughout history thanks to the quality of their notes and coins. They are also recognized for being at the forefront in terms of security measures.

The notes and coins that are currently in circulation have rings or semicircles that represent the Stone of the Sun or the Aztec Calendar.
