About Singapour Dollar

The Singapour Dollar is the official currency of Singapour. Its ISO code 7214 is SGD. Each Singapour Dollar is divided into 100 cents.

History of the currency of Sigapour

In 1965 Singapour got the independence from Malaysia and it abandoned their monetary union too: until that date they used the Strait Dollar and the Dollar of Malaya and Borneo. In 1976 Singapour started to issue their own coins and banknotes of Singapour Dollar.

The notes of Singapour Dollar in circulation are the ones of the Fourth Series. The denominations are: 2, 5, 10, 50, 100, 1,000 and 10,000 Dollars.

BANKNOTES OF SINGAPOUR DOLLAR IN CIRCULATION

On the obverse of the banknotes, the coat of arms of Singapore and the image of the first President of Singapore Encik Yusof Bin Ishak appear. Yusof was president between 1965 and 1970. His image was chosen to appear on the banknotes for his great contribution to the creation of the nation.

On the back are images of the biography of the First President regarding education, the Garden City, sports, arts, youth, government and the economy.

On the $ 2 note there is a group of students teaching outdoors. In the back there are three teaching centers: the Victoria Bridge School, the Raffles Institution and the College of Medicine.

On the 5 Dollars note there is an image of the Garden City with a centennial tembusu tree that still lives in the Botanical Garden of the city. Several other species are also represented on the ticket.

Five dollars of the most popular disciplines in the country appear on the $ 10 note: a runner, a tennis player, a footballer, a swimmer and a sailor.

In the 50 note, there are five ethnic instruments: a Chinese pipe, a Malay kompang, an Indian veena and a classical violin. These instruments represent the coexistence of various cultures in Singapore. In addition there are two fragments of two works of art exhibited in the Singapore Art Museum.

On the 100-dollar note, there are several images of young men in uniforms with the uniform of the Red Cross, the Ambulance Brigade of San Juan and the Cadets of the National Police.

The Istana building, residence of the President of the country, appears on the $ 1,000 note. Also appear the buildings of Parliament and the Supreme Court.

On the $ 10,000 note, a scientist appears in a laboratory surrounded by research material.

The coins of Singapour Dollar in circulation are the ones of the Third Series. The denominations are 5, 10, 20 and 50 Cents and 1 Dollar. On one side appears the coat of arms and in the other side appear different representative icons of the progress of Singapour as a nation.
