About the United Arab Emirates Dirham

The United Arab Emirates Dirham (or UAE Dirham) is the official currency of the United Arab Emirates. The ISO 4217 CODE is EAD although to mark the prices it is common to see the abbreviations Dh. or Dhs. A Dirham is divided into 100 fils.

History of the currency of the United Arab Emirates

The Emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates and, therefore, where you will have to use this currency, are Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm al-Qaywayn.

In 1971, the year in which the British Empire decolonized the area, the union of the seven territories was signed and, in 1973, the Dirham was introduced as the legal tender currency. At this time it replaced the Qatari Riyal in all Emirates except in Abu Dhabi where the Bareini Dinar had been used. The Qatar Riyal and the Bareini Dinar were the coins that had been used in the emirates since 1966. Before this date the official currency had been the Gulf Rupee.

UAE Dirham coins and banknotes

The legal tender notes of United Arab Emirates Dirham are 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 Dirhams. In them appear images of landscapes of the area as well as the characteristic fauna such as Al-Hosn Palace, the Abu Dhabi skyline, a Mosque in Dubai, the building of the Sharia Court, the Zayed Sports City in Abu Dhabi, the UAE Central Bank building, the Al Fahidie Fort, the Dubai World Trade Center, the Al-Jahilie Fort, the Dubai Golf and Yacht Club or the Central Souk Shopping Center. Birds also appear as different types of hawks, emblem of the Bedouin culture, very representative of the region. Or an oryx of Arabia, a kind of native antelope.

On the obverse of the notes, the texts and numbers appear in Arabic but on the back they appear in English, thus facilitating the understanding of tourists and non-Arabic speakers. The Central Bank of the UAE is the entity in charge of its issuance.

There is also a 100 Dírhams commemorative note. It shows the Sheikh Zayed Bridge in Abu Dhabi, named in honor of the founding father. And new polymer banknotes.
