About the Vietnamese Dong
The Vietnamese Dong (or "đồng" written in Vietnamese) is the official currency of Vietnam. Its ISO 4217 code is VND and is represented by the symbol "₫". Each Dong is divided into 10 hào or 100 xu but at present the subdivisions are no longer used in the day to day nor in the accounts. It is issued by the State Bank of Vietnam.
History of the currency of Vietnam
The Dong was introduced on May 3, 1978, the year in which the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (or North Vietnam) and the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam) were unified. Previously, the two countries had their own currency also called Dong that circulated since 1946 in North Vietnam and since 1953 in South Vietnam.
Since its inception, Dong has undergone a revaluation and strong inflation, especially since the 1990s. It is currently one of the most devalued currencies in the world.
Vietnamese Dong notes and coins
Vietnamese Dong notes are 10,000, 20,000, 50,000, 100,000, 200,000 and 500,000 Dong. There are notes of smaller denominations (of 100, 200, 500, 1,000, 2,000 and 5,000 Dong), but in Eurochange we do not work with notes of these denominations, reason why we can not accept them to make a change. However in the country they are still legal tender and are still used regularly. So you can receive them as a change when making a payment. Remember that you will have to use them or change them before your return.
BANKNOTES IN CIRUCALTION OF VIETNAMESE DONG
On the obverse of the note appears the image of Ho Chi Minh, president of Vietnam in the mid-20th century and leader of the independence movement and, on the reverse side, different emblematic places of the country appear.
A field of oil and gas exploitation over the sea appears on the 10,000 Dong note. In the 20,000 Dong there is the Japanese covered bridge of Cau Chua, in Hoi An. On the 50,000 note there is a landscape of the city of Hue, with two buildings known as Nghenh Luong Dinh and Phu Van Lau. On the 100,000 Dong note appears the image of the door of the second courtyard of the Hanoi Literature Temple. On the 200,000 banknote there are some of the islands of Ha Long Bay, a World Heritage Site by Unesco due to the peculiarity of its rock formations. On the 500,000 Dong note, President Ho Chi Minh's family home appears in Kim Liên, which currently houses a museum.
These notes are made of polymer. The smaller notes are made of cotton paper, but remember that at Eurochange we will not be able to accept them to change them when you return from your trip
The Vietnamese Dong coins are 200, 500, 1,000, 2,000 and 5,000 Dong. The coins of Vietnamese Dong are still legal tender, but since 2014 they are hardly used in practice and are not being issued. As a general rule all payments are made with notes.
