How to change banknotes out of circulation?

Banknotes out of circulation of any currency can only be exchanged at the issuing bank, which is usually the Central Bank of the country.

Sometimes there are deadlines to change old bills and, although it is not usual, some charge a small fee for making the change.

It is best that you look for the information on the website of the country's Central Bank.

This new note keeps in its design the characters that appeared in the previous one: David Unaipon and Edith Cowan.

David Unaipon was an Australian inventor who was also the first aboriginal author with published works. And Edith Cowan was a precursor of the rights of women and children as well as being the first female member of the Australian Parliament at the beginning of the 20th century.

Design

This new note keeps the characters of the previous note in the design: the australian writer Dame Mary Gilmore and the also writer AB "Banjo" Paterson. The images that accompany the portraits, a cabin and a rider, are representative of the way of life in Australia at the time when the authors wrote their works.

Security features

The security features of the new 10 Australian Dollar note are similar to those of the 5 Dollar one:

  • Transparent window that crosses the bill from top to bottom.
  • Iridescent paint patch.
  • Hologram that changes colour.
  • Painting in relief.
  • Microprinting.

In addition, just like the 5 Dollar note, the 10 Dollar one incorporates a relief to help the vision-impaired to recognize it.

It is expected that by the end of 2018, the issuance of the new 50 Dollars banknotes will begin. In the following years, the other denominations will be issued.

At the moment the two series will coexist in circulation.

New design

The new Australian Dollar 5 note design keeps the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, but incorporates new elements. On the back, an image of the New Parliament Building with the courtyard and its mosaic. In the transparent strip that crosses the ticket from top to bottom, appear species of typical plants and birds of the country.

Security measures

The Australian Dollar is one of the most reliable world currencies and their security measures are maintained to keep it that way:

     · Several holograms and iridescent paints that change their colors by turning

     · Transparent window

     · Relief painting

     · Microscopic painting

Improvements for the visually impaired

The new banknote  will include a new measure to help people with vision problems. This is an embossed mark and it is included by the first time in an Australian banknote. In addition, the above measures to improve the identification of the note still exist: bright colors, high contrast colors and sizes for each note.

The Australian Dollar

Australian Dollar information

Australian Dollar

The Australian Dollar is the official currency of Australia, the Christmas Islands, Coco Islands, Norfolk Island and the independent Pacific Island states: Nauru, Tuvalu and Kiribati Islands. Its ISO 4217 code is AUD and although its symbol is the dollar sign "$" is often represented preceded by an A "A$" (Australian Dollar) to differentiate it from other types dollars.

History

The Australian Dollar was introduced in 1966. Until then the legal currency was the Australian Pound. The first Dollar banknotes were 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 dollars. Years later 50 and 100 notes were included and the 1 and 2 notes were replaced for coins. The issue of the Australian Dollar is regulated by the Reserve Bank of Australia and coins by the Royal Australian Mint.

Banknotes and coins

Australian Dollar banknotes legal tender are of 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 dollars. Between 1992 and 1996 the printed cotton paper banknotes were replaced by polymer, so the dollars in circulation today are made of the more durable and harder to fake material.

The Australian Dollar has 8 coins: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents and 1 and $ 2. They are represented elements of nature and tradition and Australian culture.

Visit the pages of the Reserve Bank of Australia and the Royal Australian Mint to familiarize yourself with the notes and coins before the trip.
